Sheriff’s Log: Oct. 10 to Oct. 16, 2018

Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Oct. 10 to Oct. 16, 2018. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

October 10

• Deputies conducted patrol checks at “Three Palms” and “Hogsback Gate” regarding individuals drinking and leaving trash/beer cans at these locations. Deputies will continue to enforce drinking and littering laws.

October 11

• Deputies arrested Jason Sarafin of Huntington Beach on suspicion of vandalizing Halloween decorations in the 400 block of Crescent Avenue.

October 12

• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Whittley Avenue regarding a disturbance. Deputies arrested Matthew Gonzales of Avalon on suspicion of threatening the victim with a screwdriver during an argument.

October 13

• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Sumner Avenue regarding a traffic collision. A rental golf cart collided into a parked vehicle. The cause of the collision was unsafe turning. There were no injuries.

October 14

• Deputies saw a family trying to calm their autistic 20-year-old son in the 400 block of Crescent Avenue. As a deputy was assisting the family, the son bit the deputy in the back of his left arm. The deputy and the son were taken to the hospital.

October 15

• Deputies arrested Richard Farley from Huntington Beach and Laura Daugherty from Santa Barbara on their boat in Avalon Harbor for allegedly using a visitors lost credit card to purchase numerous items. Deputies returned the stolen items to the Avalon businesses and the lost wallet to the victim.

October 16

• Deputies responded to a missing person call on Pebbly Beach Road. A 29-year-old family member had not been seen for two days. Deputies were able to determine that family members spoke to her and she was safe.

Safety Note

It is illegal to kill deer on Catalina Island, unless you have a hunting license and are complying with the hunting laws. Killing deer in the city of Avalon is illegal.
