John Leonard Connolly, Jr. Rest in Peace

John Leonard Connolly Jr. was born in Long Beach California to John and Bertha Connolly. Ten days later, he held the record as the youngest child to fly via seaplane to Catalina Island, where his father’s company, Connolly Pacific operated the quarry. So began John’s lifetime love for the Island.

After 80 years of abundant living, John passed away on Friday November 21, 2014.

He was an avid student of life, always curious about its complexity and its beauty. He graduated with a BA from Occidental College, A master’s degree from University of Southern California, and a Ph.D from University of  Pennsylvania.

A merchant mariner in his youth, he became fascinated with architectural history. He inspired generations of students throughout his academic career in art history, teaching at the State University of NY, Reed, Dartmouth, Duke, Wake Forest, College of Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins and Maryland Institute College of Art. He traveled throughout Europe for his research, and especially loved exploring the streets and museums of his beloved Paris.

John was devoted to his wife Amy Bloom Connolly and children Bridgid (and husband Dave), John Patrick (and wife Tamara), and Gabriel (and wife Juliana). His two grandchildren Maximo and Milo were his constant delight.

This summer, John’s family will be visiting the Island from August 1-9th to honor his life and his love for Catalina. To contact the family, email: rememberingJLC@gmail.com. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Catalina Island Conservancy.
