The Avalon Medical Development Corporation announced this week the results of its recent election of corporate officers for 2016.

The board will be led by newly elected Chairperson Michael Ponce, a former member of the City Council.

Serving with him are Vice Chair Conrado Vega, Secretary Lisa Moss, and Treasurer Catrina Awalt.

Other board members serving in director responsibilities are Judy Grear, Dr. Monte Mellon, Trudy Saldana and Bea VanEvery.

The board has a solid membership and a commitment to Catalina Island Medical Center.

One of the first decisions made by the hospital board in its new year was to commission a “Community Needs Assessment and Services Exploration Project.”

Rochelle Spinarski, principal consultant for Rural Health Solutions has been retained to examine Catalina Island’s demographic and health trends, community perceptions, preferences and priorities for health care and options for Medical Center going forward.

An essential future decision will be to determine how best to use the existing hospital building in addressing future needs.  Extensive use of focus groups targeting a broad community base along with some brief questionnaires are designed to elicit comments regarding any unmet health care needs, expanding existing services, changes in Medical Center’s community outreach and future facility planning options.

The evaluation process is scheduled to get under way in August by gathering health status data, trends and demographics associated with our area.

The actual on-site data collection process will begin in late September and carry on into October. The final written report is to be presented to the hospital board by the end of November 2015.

In terms of the process, focus groups and interviews will be arranged with invitations sent to targeted audience members.

Open forums in at least two community events will allow any community members to participate.  Spanish translators will be available to interpret comments and questions as needed.
