The 44th Annual Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup will return on February 21. This massive cleanup event brings in volunteer divers from far and wide to scour the seabed for trash and debris. Last year, more than 260 divers, along with volunteers on the shore, collected approximately 1,400 pounds of debris from waters around Casino Point, Step Beach and the Green Pier area. They collected nearly 1,500 pieces of debris and also rescued more than 50 animals that were entangled in debris and safely returned them to the ocean.
The event also helps support the USC Hyperbaric Chamber and the Avalon Rotary Club Foundation. For more on the event, including potential ways to volunteer for the cleanup, visit avalonharborcleanup.org.
