New Harbormaster

Lane Garrett took over as the new harbor master at Catalina’s Two Harbors in March. Garrett brings years of experience. As a young man he followed his dreams and went to Alaska to pursue a career in commercial fishing. He also spent a few years as a private yacht captain.

Eagle chicks hatch early

The bald eagle-hatching season began in early March as two bald eagle chicks hatched from their shells and came into the world on the Channel Island of Santa Cruz. The chicks came a little earlier than usual in 2012. “Their timing was different this year,” said Peter Sharpe, a biologist with the Institute for Wildlife Studies.
