Catalina Year In Review 2012: February

Bone Marrow drive held for Packy Offield

A bone marrow donor drive was held on the Island Feb. 3 and 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the post office arcade.

Finding a bone marrow donor would provide the best hope for a full recovery for Paxson Offield, who was battling leukemia. Offield, who is an integral part of Catalina Island, was diagnosed in December and had been receiving treatment in Portland, OR.

According to Be The Match, for thousands of patients with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma, a marrow transplant from an unrelated donor is their best or only hope for a cure. Contact Gail Hodge at (310) 510-2000, ext. 1234, for more information.

Cruise Ship Pier Option offered

An option was added in February to the Cruise Ship Pier Options presented to the city of Avalon in October 2011, according to a statement recently issued by Island Enterprises, Inc.

The proposal: an alternative ship terminal with a landing strip for aircraft. This option reportedly doubles the capacity for cruise ship docking, provides better staging areas for passengers, includes a small marina, would solve the landslide problem on Pebbly Beach Road and provides access for commercial airplanes, all at one nearby location without hindering the presently congested Cabrillo Mole.

The plan has the advantage of creating enough land area to park two or more cruise ships, build a 4,500-foot long commercial airport runway and a large, long dockside area for tour buses, taxis, and visitor serving facilities.
