Playoff schedule set, championship game on Thursday

The final league games of the Catalina CoEd Softball season were not a disappointment. Game one featured Sunset Bar & Grill taking on Straight Up Builders.

Straight Up Builders left bases loaded in the top of the first. Sunset Bar & Grill promptly scored two runs on three base hits and a triple from Gabriel Alvarado in the bottom of the inning. An error, two base hits and a double from Phil Lopez brought home two more runs for Sunset Bar & Grill in the second.

Tyler Engel hit a solo inside-the-park home run for Sunset Bar & Grill in the fourth. Juan De La Cruz made the highlight reel when he handled the hot line drive at third for the third out, forcing Sunset Bar & Grill to leave the bases loaded.

Straight Up Builders got on the board with a run in the sixth. Sunset Bar & Grill had two out with a runner on when time expired and the game ended with the score Straight Up Builders 1, Sunset Bar & Grill 5.

For Straight Up Builders Juan De La Cruz, Brandon Franco, Julio Chavoya and Maddie Hiniker collected two hits. Juan Hernandez and Chris Arnold had one hit.

For Sunset Bar & Grill Alexandra Tran collected five hits. Gabriel Alvarado had two hits, while Joe Hernandez, Tyler Engel, Francisco Bravo and Phil Lopez had one.

League Champion Buoys & Gulls took on Bravo’s Landscaping in game two of the night. Bravo’s Landscaping got on the board first in the bottom of the first with three runs off a triple from Jose Octavo, a base hit and a two RBI home run from Leo Aguilar.

Buoys & Gulls used a double from Jack Villagomez, an error and a base hit to score two in the second. Bravo’s Landscaping kept pace with two runs off a base hit and doubles from Jose Octavo and Nestor Cubillas.

Buoys & Gulls scored a run off three base hits in the third. Bravo’s Landscaping answered with a double from Luis Lazaro followed by a home run from Leo Aguilar. Jack Villagomez opened the fourth for Buoys & Gulls with a solo home run. Back to back doubles from Uriel Castillo and Missy Schafer were followed by an error to allow three to come home.

Bravo’s Landscaping answered with an inside-the-park home run from Nestor Cubillas, followed by the home run from Luis Lazaro for two. In the sixth inning Buoys & Gulls tied it up with three runs off three base hits and a double from Missy Schafer. With time expired Bravo’s Landscaping got their last at bat. They failed to get a runner on, and the game ended in a tie, 9-9.

For Buoys & Gulls Missy Schafer collected four hits. Ryan Adkins contributed three hits. Jack Villagomez and J.D. Laflin had two hits. Hugh Bevins, Uriel Castillo and Ron Bevins contributed one hit.

For Bravo’s Landscaping Jose Octavo, Nestor Cubillas, Luis Lazaro, Leo Aguilar and Rachel McCormick collected two hits. Santiago Martinez and Gustavo Aguilar had one hit.

By the time you read this, the first week of tournament will be complete. In game one Buoys & Gulls will take on Straight Up Builders, game two will have Sunset Bar & Grill facing Bravo’s Landscaping.

The tournament finals will be at 6 p.m. on Nov. 6
