The Avalon High football team improved to 2-0 in the Express League with a dominating 64-6 win over Calvary Chapel of Downey on Saturday in Downey.
Aaron Rubio led the scoring output with six total touchdowns. Quarterback Owen Chavoya three three touchdown passes and Eduardo Zavala chipped in by scoring multiple two-point conversion runs.
The game began with Calvary Chapel misfiring on a shotgun snap that went into the end zone for a safety that gave the Lancers a quick 2-0 lead. On the ensuing free kick, Matthew De La Rosa returned the kick for a touchdown and the Lancers were off and running.
The defense kept the Grizzlies in check led by Rubio and Nathan Jones, who were each credited with a forced fumble. Joe Leon and Mateo Perez were each credited with multiple quarterback sacks.
The Lancers face another road game on Saturday at Southlands Christian, which is 8-0 on the season. The Lancers (5-2 overall), are now ranked above Southlands in the MaxPreps rankings, at No. 12 in the CIF-SS. Southlands is ranked No. 21.
