Avalon School Interact club joins community effort

The Rotary Club of Avalon and Avalon School Interact club members recently held a community cleanup day. Seven Rotarians and nine Avalon School students participated in the event.

Interact club member participants included Curtis Leo, Beatriz Pedroza, Hannah Mahan, Alexa Dwelley, Faith Glass, Abigail Zaragoza (with little sister Samantha), Makenna Lee, Ellie Pedroza and Trina Markowitz.

The inaugural “Ocean Awareness Challenge” event will be held Sept. 9-11 2016 at Emerald Bay, Catalina Island. The deadline to register is Aug. 24. The event is sponsored by the Woman’s Sailing Association-Orange County. Come explore Catalina Island’s natural coastal terrain while learning more about local marine life and how we can make a difference to preserve our natural coastal resources and fragile eco systems. Several notable marine science experts will be speaking at the event.

One of the highlights of the Ocean Awareness Challenge Weekend—Sept. 9-11, 2016—will be participating in the guided snorkeling eco-tour of Santa Catalina Island’s Emerald Bay; a marine protected area (MPA) and one of the top 10 snorkeling spots in the world.

Annie MacAulay, president & CEO of Mountain and Sea Educational Adventures, along with her team, will conduct the tour.

Over the past year, the City of Avalon has been going through the process of publicly bidding the operation of its transit program. The city’s transit program which consists of a fixed-route bus and Dial-a-Ride is wholly funded through a variety of grants that require the city periodically publicly bid the operating contract. The successful contractor, Transportation Concepts, operates similar, small transit programs throughout California.
