Original Antonio’s – and its nearly half a century of serving Catalina Island residents and visitors – will continue, thanks to new owners Mike and Cinde Cassidy.
“Original Antonio’s has been a part of my life – both personally and professionally – for more than four decades,” Mike Cassidy said. “We’re looking forward to making this family favorite a part of our family of businesses.”
The Cassidys, who own several successful Catalina businesses, including Chet’s Hardware, Northwind Refrigeration and Catalina Business Services, assumed ownership of Original Antonio’s in March of 2024. They plan to honor the tradition of Antonio’s with few changes to its business operations or menu.
The restaurant’s Sumner Avenue location was home to Reynolds McCullough’s Reyn’s Men’s Wear from shortly after World War II until 1958, when the company moved to Hawaii and became the storied clothing line Reyn Spooner. Enzo Paradisi opened an Italian deli at the location shortly after Reyn’s Men’s Wear departed for Honolulu. In 1977, the popular eatery was purchased by the late Jack Tucey, who renamed it Antonio’s and created the family friendly favorite that became a tradition for generations of families. With pizza, pasta and sandwiches, as well as beer and wine, Antonio’s is an economical dining option that also offers a quick to-go alternative thanks to its quick service window.
“We know what Antonio’s means both to the people who live on the island and those who love to visit Catalina,” Cinde Cassidy said. “There’s a reason this restaurant has survived as long as it has and we will continue providing the great food and fun atmosphere that has made Antonio’s a part of so many lives.”
Cassidy said that the menu favorites such as cheese crisp, day-old spaghetti, and pastrami sandwiches will remain on the menu, as will the retro 1950s vibe, complete with checkered tablecloths and jukebox favorites. The family is planning some improvements, including a new wine list and the possibility of delivery.
“We won’t be changing any of the things that Antonio’s customers love, but we are hoping to make a few improvements that will ensure that the restaurant survives for another 50 years,” Cinde Cassidy said. “We can’t wait to welcome the restaurant’s many dedicated customers and hope to host many new fans in the near future.”
Original Antonios is located at 114 Sumner Ave., in Avalon. It is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.
