Women golfers play in Tin Whistle tourney

Islander Elena Maria won first place in the Catalina Island Women’s Golf Club Tin Whistle Golf Tournament, held Thursday, March 7.

In the Tin Whistle tournament, net scores are determined using each player’s official Southern California Golf Association handicap. Points are earned for pars, birdies and eagles; points are subtracted for net scores of bogey or higher.

The player with the highest total points is the winner. First place honors went to Elena Maria, and Val Schafer was second. Ellen Hodge won honors for the longest drive, and Cathy Sweeney won the prize for a tee shot closest to the hole.  

Two golfers, Marty Ashleigh and Ellen Hodge, were recognized for special ninth-hole green honors. Awards were given out at a luncheon held at Steve’s Steakhouse immediately following the tournament. The Catalina Island Women’s Golf Club meets each Thursday morning at the Country Club pro-shop to arrange teams and learn about the game of the day.  For more information, about the club, call the pro-shop at  (310) 510-0530.
