Game one in week two of the Catalina CoEd Softball season couldn’t have been closer. Straight Up Builders was up first and promptly scored two runs off the double from Juan Hernandez followed by the home run from Juan De La Cruz.
In the bottom of the inning Julian Tejeda hit a double for Buoys & Gulls, but was left at third. In the third inning Straight Up Builders scored two more runs off the two RBI home run from Juan Hernandez. Buoys & Gulls got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs off four base hits. Defense ruled the next two innings.
In the top of the sixth inning Melissa Schafer was the defensive star with her amazing grab of a line drive towards second, then turning without a pause to throw out the runner trying to return to first base for the double play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Buoys & Gulls got their last at bat down by one. J.D. Laflin opened with a triple, and later scored on an error to tie the game. A long fly ball ended the game in a 4-4 tie.
For Straight Up Builders Juan Hernandez was three for three. Juan De La Cruz, Jim Hinkley, Matilda Martinez and Tiffany Credel all contributed two hits. Julio Chavoya collected one hit.
For Buoys & Gulls J.D. Laflin was three for three. Julian Tejeda, Ron Bevins and Grecia Conde collected two hits. Ryan Adkins, Jack Villagomez, Hugh Bevins and Paul Daniel Romo contributed one hit.
Game two had Sunset Bar & Grill facing off against Bravo’s Landscaping. Sunset Bar & Grill was up first, and Gabriel Alvarado hit a double and later scored. Bravo’s Landscaping answered with a triple from Jose Octavo, a double from Marco Gallegos and a base hit to score two.
Sunset Bar & Grill hit through the batting order in the third inning. Three base hits, a walk, a double from Phil Lopez, triples from Gilbert Hernandez and Jose Barreras, and inside-the-park home runs from Francisco Bravo and Alexandra Tran added up to nine runs crossing the plate.
In the bottom of the inning Marco Gallegos hit a two RBI home run for Bravo’s Landscaping. In the top of the fourth inning a base hit, a walk, and doubles from Joe Hernandez, Gabriel Alvarado and Jose Barreras brought home four more runs for Sunset Bar & Grill.
Bravo’s Landscaping again scored two runs in the bottom of the inning off solo home runs from Nestor Cubillas and Luis Lazaro. The fifth inning was a repeat of the fourth inning. Sunset Bar & Grill scored four runs off five base hits and a double from Phil Lopez.
Bravo’s Landscaping scored two runs off four base hits. Time ran out in the bottom of the sixth inning without either team scoring a run. The game ended with the score Bravo’s Landscaping 8, Sunset Bar & Grill 18.
For Bravo’s Landscaping Marco Gallegos was three for three. Jose Octavo, Nestor Cubillas, Luis Lazaro and Chela Hernandez contributed two hits. Isaac Ortiz, Gustavo Aguilar and Renton Minuto collected one hit.
For Sunset Bar & Grill Alexandra Tran had the hot bat, collecting five hits. Gabriel Alvarado and Phil Lopez contributed three hits. Joe Hernandez, Gilbert Hernandez, Francisco Bravo, Gustavo Gutierrez and Jose Barreras had two hits. Rafael Silva and Teagan Machado had one hit.
