Crime prevention: phone and online scams
Phone and online scams are a national problem. Unfortunately our community is not exempt from the criminals who perpetrate these crimes. To avoid being a victim, here are some things to consider and share with your family and friends, especially those that might be easily intimidated or coerced over the phone:
• Did you get a call or email saying you won something? Except there’s a fee? Never pay for a prize or purchase gift cards and give the cards’ numbers to the caller. These are scams and you will lose your money.
• Did you get an email, text, or call asking for your credit card, account numbers, or Social Security Number? Never give that information to anyone who asks over email, text or phone.
• Did the IRS call saying you owe money? The IRS never calls to ask for money.
• Do you rent vacation property using social media? If so, use reputable companies or verify the validity of onlineoffers before paying for a rental.
