Sheriff’s Log: Sept. 24 through Oct. 1, 2025

Avalon Sheriff's Station.

Editor’s Note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station’s Significant Incidents Report for the period of Sept. 24 through Oct. 1, 2025. All individuals mentioned are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Please remember, not every call ends in handcuffs—sometimes it’s just a reminder, a warning, or a neighborly chat with your deputies.

October 2

  • Suspicious Circumstances – Chimes Tower

A concerned caller reported an individual with a flashlight at the base of the Chimes Tower who appeared to be hanging lights. Deputies responded and found an employee installing LED lights — not a cat burglar. The tower remains well-lit and crime-free.

October 3

  • Traffic Enforcement – Banning Drive and Country Club Drive: Deputies conducted several traffic stops, with citations and warnings handed out.

October 4

  • Disturbance – Chi Chi Club

Deputies were called regarding a disagreement over an ID card. The ID was legitimate, and the rightful owner left without incident.

  • Trespassing – 200 Block of Whittley Avenue

Deputies responded after two intoxicated females who reportedly entered the wrong residence. After determining there was no criminal intent — just a case of wrong address, wrong night — they were escorted back to their hotel.

  • Domestic Violence Arrest – 300 Block of Descanso Avenue

Deputies responded to a domestic violence incident involving two individuals.

One of the individuals was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence earning him a free boat ride captained by deputies.

  • Disturbance and Arson Arrest – Hermit Gulch Campground

Deputies responded to reports of a camper yelling obscenities about fire safety and tent lighting. The individual was contacted by deputies.

After a long discussion about appropriate behavior in public, and no crime had been committed, deputies ended the call and returned to patrol.

A few hours later, deputies received a second call to the campground regarding the same individual now reportedly starting a fire and exhibiting erratic behavior. The individual was arrested on suspicion of arson.

  • Disturbance – Sumner Avenue (Abe’s Liquor)

Deputies contacted an individual shining a flashlight into people’s faces. The individual was counseled and left the area without further incident.

  • Suspicious Circumstances – 200 Block of Clarissa Avenue

A resident reported strange noises coming from an upstairs area. Deputies checked the location — no burglars or evidence of entry were located.

  • Domestic Violence Arrest – Cabrillo Mole

Deputies responded after a report of a man striking a woman near the boat terminal. The suspect was identified and arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

October 5

  • Missing Person (Located)

Deputies took a missing person report after a parent reported their teenage daughter hadn’t returned home after a school dance. During the investigation, deputies were relieved to find out the teen contacted her parents and returned home safely.

October 6

  • Disturbance – 500 Block of Crescent Avenue

Deputies responded to a disturbance involving a disagreement over a restaurant tab. The individuals described in the call were located and then, at the advice of deputies, decided paying their tab was a much better idea than later eating a county sandwich in the booking cell at the station. The individuals were advised that even if they don’t eat or even like the food ordered, paying for the ordered food is not an option. Everyone eventually paid up, and dinner ended peacefully — no “defrauding an innkeeper,” just delayed tipping.

October 7

  • Traffic Enforcement – Marilla Avenue and Crescent Avenue: Deputies initiated traffic stops for failing to stop at the stop sign or for using cell phones while driving. Drivers were warned or cited.

October 8

  • Front Street Foot Patrols: Hurricane Priscilla bought an unexpected visit to the island from a 7-day Carnival Cruise. Deputies spent time walking front street to ensure the safety of the local businesses and visitors.

Safety Note of the Week

With cooler weather and shorter days ahead, please remember to use bike lights and reflective gear when riding after dark. Whether it’s a pedal bike, e-bike, or golf cart, visibility keeps everyone safer. Deputies will continue monitoring traffic safety around town — because in Avalon, we prefer our lights twinkling on the bay, not flashing in the rearview mirror.
