Sheriff’s Log: March 30 to April 5, 2023

Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of March 30 to April 5, 2023.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

April 6

  • Deputies responded to Avalon Bay regarding possible human bones found in the water. The bones were examined by a representative of the Tongva Tribe, Gabriel Robles. They appeared to be mammal bones, but not human.
  • Deputies responded to the 100 block of Clarissa Avenue regarding a family disturbance call. The person who reported the incident advised the other party had left the area prior to their arrival and no crime had occurred.
  • Deputies responded to 111 Crescent Avenue “Bellanca Hotel” regarding a male in front of location making a disturbance and refusing to leave. When deputies arrived, they recognized the disturbing party as a regular contact. The disturbing party stated he was just trying to spread his message about his religious beliefs. After talking to the deputies, he decided to “call it a night”, head home and rest up for another day of spreading his message tomorrow.

April 7

  • Deputies responded to 108 Catalina Avenue regarding a male at the location bothering customers. Deputies responded, but the disturbing party had left the area prior to their arrival.
  • Deputies responded to a loud party call at the 200 block of Whittley Avenue. The disturbing party was contacted and advised of the complaint. The disturbing party agreed to keep the noise to a minimum.

April 8

  • Deputy personnel conducted traffic enforcement of Avalon Canyon Road.

April 9

  • A deputy and the captain responded to the Cabrillo Mole regarding two male adults arguing in the Catalina Express line.

After talking to the involved parties and several witnesses, it was determined there was probable cause to believe a misdemeanor had occurred. One of the involved parties placed Damion Davis, 25 of Norwalk, CA under citizen’s arrest on suspicion of battery.

  • Deputies worked foot beats and vehicle patrols of Crescent Avenue to ensure the safety and security of the public.

April 10

  • A deputy and the captain responded to 230 Crescent Avenue “Big Antonio’s” regarding an intoxicated female refusing to leave.

The disturbing party was asked to step outside and she complied.

She displayed the symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol and appeared unable to care for herself. Cherie Juarez, 60, of Seal Beach, CA was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.

April 11

  • Dispatch received a call of an injured hiker on Trans Catalina Trail between Little Harbor and the Isthmus. Isthmus Deputy Hodge activated the West Search and Rescue Team (WSR). A coordinated search was performed with deputy personnel, Isthmus Bay Watch, Conservancy Rangers, and WSR. The injured hiker was located and transported to Avalon for treatment.

April 12

  • Deputies worked foot beats and vehicle patrols of Crescent Avenue to ensure the safety and security of the public.

Public Safety Reminder

The speed limit on Avalon Canyon Road is 20 miles an hour. With the increased numbers of hikers and other tourists coming to the island, please follow the speed limit to keep our community a safe place to live and visit.
