Sheriff’s Log: June 29 to July 5, 2023

The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of June 29 to July 5, 2023.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

June 30

  • Deputies responded to a business disturbance on the 200 block of Crescent Avenue. The caller stated a male adult was harassing customers who were trying to enjoy their ice cream. The deputies contacted the man and advised him he was no longer allowed at the shop. He was issued a no trespassing order and advised he would be arrested if he returned.

July 1

  • Deputies responded to 1 St. Catherine Way regarding a disturbance involving a man and woman. The deputies observed the man and woman arguing with each other. The deputies contacted them and noticed they displayed the symptoms of being intoxicated. The deputies determined they were both drunk in public and unable to care for themselves. Oscar Gastelum, 32, of Los Angeles, and Maria Hurtado Rivas, 30, of Glendale, were arrested on suspicion of public intoxication and booked at Avalon Station. During the booking process the male suspect ripped the telephone off the wall causing approximately $1000 in damages. He was additionally charged with suspicion of vandalism.

July 2

  • Deputies responded to the 100 block of Sumner Avenue regarding a call for service involving a man possibly in possession of a gun. The deputies contacted the man and observed the symptoms of being drunk. The deputies detained the man and conducted an investigation. They determined the man was not in possession of a gun but was intoxicated. Evan Price, 23, of Los Angeles was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public and booked at Avalon Station.
  • Deputies responded to the 100 block of Sumner Avenue regarding a disturbance call. The caller stated a man at the location was arguing with security. The deputies arrived and recognized the man from a prior call when he advised by security guards, he was drinking too much at the club. The deputies contacted the man and determined he was drunk in public. Dani Bataq, 25, of El Cajon was arrested and booked at Avalon Sheriff’s Station.
  • Deputies responded to Bird Rock regarding a boating accident. The deputies contacted both boat operators and wrote a report for the minor collision.
  • Deputies responded to the 200 block of Crescent Avenue regarding a business disturbance. The caller stated there was a man at the location harassing customers. The caller also stated the man was served with a no trespassing order one day earlier. The deputies arrived, recognized the man from prior calls and arrested David Jackson, 70, of Los Angeles, on suspicion of trespassing just as they told him they would. He was booked at Avalon Station.
  • A sergeant conducted a traffic stop on the 200 block of Metropole Ave. The driver was issued a citation for driving without a license.

July 3

  • Deputies responded to the 500 block of Crescent Avenue for a disturbance call. The caller stated a man was yelling at people. The deputies arrived and spoke to a woman who stated her boyfriend was the person causing the problems and he had left the area. While talking to the female the deputies could tell she was intoxicated and unable to care for herself. Angelica Cruz, 42, of Cerritos, was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public and booked at Avalon Sheriff’s Station.

July 4

  • Deputies responded to a disturbance call at Two Harbors Shoreline. The caller stated 2 men were arguing over crossed anchor lines. The deputies spoke with both men asked them if arguing was going to untangle their lines. The men were cooperative and corrected their behavior.
  • Deputies responded to the 400 block of Crescent Avenue regarding a disturbance call. The deputies contacted the disturbing party who appeared intoxicated.

When the deputy was speaking with the man, his speech was mumbled, and he was slurring. The man continually insisted the deputy sit down so he could discuss respect. The deputy eventually arrested Daniel Martin, 26, of Salinas on suspicion being drunk in public and treated him respectfully during the process.
