Sheriff’s Log: July 13 to July 19, 2023

The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of July 13 to July 19, 2023.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

July 13

  • Deputies responded to the Green Pleasure Pier at 3 in the morning for a possible fight on a boat in the harbor. The deputies arrived and saw a man standing at the top of the harbor office staircase shouting and slurring his words. The man was detained pending a drunk in public investigation. The man stated he drank 500 milliliters of wine while enjoying his evening on the water. Artem Getmansky, 39, of Van Nuys, was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication and booked at Avalon Station.

July 14

  • Deputies responded to crescent Avenue regarding a man who possibly had a pistol in his waistband. The deputies contacted the man, safely conducted a search and determined the man did not possess a weapon. The man was thankful for the deputies handling of the situation and treating him with respect.

July 16

  • Deputies responded to the 300 block of E. Whitley Avenue regarding a family disturbance. The caller stated a mother and daughter were arguing. The deputies contacted the women and determined there had been no crime committed. The daughter left the location to defuse the situation.
  • Deputies responded to the Tour Plaza regarding a female transient sleeping in the plants. The woman was contacted and offered counseling and a boat ticket if she needed help getting home. The woman stated she was fine and lived on the island. The woman was issued a letter of agency and advised she would be arrested if she trespassed on the property again.
  • Deputies responded to Lovers Cove regarding a fight involving 4 males. During the fight, one of the victims was punched in the mouth causing trauma to his mouth. The suspects have both been identified and the case is actively being investigated by Detective Meyers.

July 17

  • Deputies responded to the 600 block of Crescent Avenue regarding a business disturbance. The caller stated a tourist did not want to pay for his golf cart rental. Once the customer saw the deputy arrive and exit his patrol car, he immediately paid his bill.
  • Deputies observed a man and woman arguing at the Mole. They contacted both parties who had traveled to the island for a day trip. The man was upset at the woman because he did not want to come to the island but she insisted he accompany her. The woman was upset at the man because he called her bald-headed.

The captain of the boat let both parties onto the boat and advised the woman to stay upstairs and the man downstairs. The boat departed Avalon.

July 18

  • Captain King monitored traffic at Clarissa and Crescent due to it being cruise ship day and countless pedestrians were walking on the roadway, causing drivers to drive like they were playing a game of frogger. The Captain issued a citation for the Vehicle Code violation.
