Sheriff’s Log: April 13 to April 26, 2023

The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of April 13 to April 26.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

April 13

  • Deputies responded to the 300 block of Whitley Avenue regarding a person knocking on a front door for 30 minutes. When deputies arrived, they contacted a female in front of the location. She told the deputies she thought she was home on Metropole Ave. The deputies explained she was on the wrong street and drove her home.
  • Deputies responded to the 400 block of Tremont Street regrading a report of paranormal activity. The informant stated strange activity has been occurring all day causing damage to the location. A vandalism report was taken and is being investigated by Detective Meyers.

April 14

  • Deputy personnel conducted traffic enforcement along Pebbly Beach Road and Beacon Street.

April 15

  • Deputy personnel responded to a fight call at the Cabrillo Mole. Deputies contacted a couple near the restrooms who were having a verbal argument. While talking to the male, it was determined he was extremely intoxicated. Robert Martinez, 51, Los Angeles was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public.

April 16

  • Deputy personnel responded to a business disturbance call at Pete’s Cafe. When the deputies arrived, they contacted the disturbing parties who appeared to have had maybe a few too many libations. Once the disturbing parties saw the deputies, they decided it might be a good time to finish celebrating back at the hotel.

April 17

  • Deputy personnel conducted traffic enforcement along Pebbly Beach Road and Beacon Street.

April 18

  • Deputies responded to a call regarding several people setting up camp in the tree near the top of Tremont Street and Banning Drive. When deputies arrived, they found 3 people who live in the area laying in hammocks under the trees enjoying Avalon’s fantastic weather. With no sign of temporary housing in the area, the deputies concluded the call for service.

April 19

  • Deputies worked foot beats and vehicle patrols of Crescent Avenue to ensure the safety and security of the public.

April 20

  • Deputies received information from LAPD that a suspect wanted for attempted murder may have possibly traveled to Avalon. Detective Meyers and sergeant Durante immediately conducted an investigation and coordinated a search of the island for the suspect. Within 1 hour of being notified, the suspect was arrested without incident. The suspect did not possess any weapons and there was no danger to Avalon residents. The suspect was transported Overtown via LA County Sheriff’s helicopter and released to the custody of LAPD.
  • Deputies responded to the 100 block of Catalina Avenue regarding a missing 9 year old boy. The caller stated her son was upset because he could not ride in a golf cart and ran away from his mother. The deputies located the child and reunited him with his mother.

April 21

  • Deputies were contacted at Avalon Station by a Mom who stated her 11 year old daughter was not following directions. The mother said her daughter was not listening to her while at the swimming pool. The deputies advised both the Mom and daughter to be good humans and respect each other.
  • A deputy and a sergeant were conducting foot patrol on Crescent Ave when they were flagged down by a local restaurant employee. The employee stated there was a problem inside his business and a customer was agitated and becoming aggressive. The deputy and sergeant entered the location and observed the disturbing party. They explained the wide variety of options the man had to choose from. After some careful thought, the man decided to pay his bill and return to his hotel room.

April 22

  • Deputies responded to a suspicious person call on Crescent Avenue. The caller stated a man with a hoodie was talking to himself. The deputies contacted the man and discovered he was a tourist who had lost his way. The man did not have cell service and could not remember which hotel he was staying at. The deputies contacted the lost man’s girlfriend and drove him to his hotel.

April 23

  • Deputies on patrol observed 3 suspicious men on Crescent Avenue. They contacted the men and determined they had not committed any crime and were loitering in the area. The men left the location and returned to their hotel.

April 24

  • Deputies responded to the “Arch” for a disturbance call involving a man who was drinking beer and yelling. The deputies contacted the man and recognized him as a repeat customer. They counseled the man regarding his behavior and drinking beer in public. The man threw his beer away and continued yelling as he walked away. He told the deputies yelling was not a crime and it was his 1st Amendment right.

April 25

  • Detective Meyers was contacted at the station by a local resident who stated he was victim of theft via a forged check. Detective Meyers determined the incident is related to a case he is currently investigating that involves numerous victims.

April 26

  • Deputies responded to Pebbly Beach regarding a possible domestic incident on a cruise ship. The deputies contacted cruise ship staff who stated the incident occurred 2 days prior in International Waters. They stated the incident was handled by their staff and they did not need the sheriff’s assistance.

ABC

On Tuesday April 25, Officers with Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) visited Catalina Island. The officers visited numerous bars and restaurants in the city and introduced themselves to the owners and employees. The visit was focused on education and compliance with ABC regulations.
