Many thanks to Catalina Island

David N. Young

It is with the deep sense of humility that I take this opportunity to thank our readers on Catalina Island for the many blessings afforded me during my tenure as editor of the Catalina Islander.

I have assumed a new role with the Orange County Neighborhood Newspapers, Inc., the parent company of the Catalina Islander.

Nevertheless, I hope the many people I’ve met there understand how truly special they are and what an amazing place I know Catalina Island to be. As I tried to communicate many times, there is simply no place on earth quite like Avalon and Catalina Island and I will miss the interaction very much. Even in a personal capacity, I do hope to maintain my friendship with the island. Whether it was during my exciting exploration of the island’s interior, my discussions with city officials or visits with the Island Company and Conservancy, and the opportunity to work with the Chamber on the election, I was so fortunate to get a true sense of what it means to be an “Islander.”

Who could ever forget people like Queen Rosie and the rest?

Together, we had many experiences and for that, I am so grateful.

We sought to make government more accountable and we explored ways to enhance cooperation between the island company and the island’s elected government.

There were so many remarkable stories, of course, too many to mention by name but I’ve enjoyed them all.

So thank you, Catalina Island from the bottom of my heart.

Life is all about the journey and experiences cannot be judged merely on their length, but their intensity. On that accord, I will always remember this experience with fondness and pride. I have met so many wonderful people, so many of whom have entrusted me with their remarkable stories and incredible friendships.

To be such a trustee in public service is a humbling and powerful experience. For that, I am grateful to all readers of the Islander and for management for allowing me to tell these stories. I wish the new editor and his team much success in the future.

Once infected with the true spirit of Catalina Island, however, one can begin to understand why it is simply not possible to say goodbye. It’s no secret why people all over the world subscribe to the paper because once you learn to breathe island air; one can never fully get Catalina out of their hearts. It’s an island of breathtaking beauty and people to match.

Thank you again Catalina Island.
