For the first time ever, Avalon has its own YMCA Youth & Government Delegation! Local students are stepping up to learn how government works by writing bills, debating ideas, and representing our island.
The delegation elected its first officers: Stephanie Rodriguez as President and Kathryn Gonzalez as Vice President. They have already begun exploring important topics like healthcare, with Tim Kielpinski, CEO of Catalina Island Medical Center, explaining how laws and funding impact our hospital and our community.
Next, the delegates will attend their first leadership camp at Camp Roberts, part of three statewide events preparing them for the highlight of the year: a week at the State Capitol in Sacramento, where Avalon’s students will take on real government roles alongside other California youth.
Led by Yesenia De La Rosa, Avalon City Council Member; Eileen Torres-Zeller, Administration; and Jeremy Echnoz, Sr. Executive Director for Los Cerritos YMCA.
Our island’s next generation is well on its way to leading our community.
