The Avalon High School Boys Golf Team competed in the CIF-SS Playoffs on Monday, May 19, at Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach. Unfortunately, the Lancers’ bid for a CIF-SS Championship came up short, but not without a valiant effort.
The Lancers finished in 4th Place out of 32 teams and were only 6 strokes behind the 1st Place team, Alta Loma. Aaron Meza was our best golfer on this day shooting a 6 over par 76. Jose Pedroza was right behind Meza with a 77.
Pedroza also competed in the CIF-SS Individuals on Thursday, May 14, at Los Robles Greens, located in Thousand Oaks , California. He competed against 130 other accomplished golfers and represented himself nicely. Senior Jacob Mello finished in 3rd position for the CIF-SS team event and showed just how diverse and talented of an athlete he really is.
Mello along with Seniors Aaron Meza, Uriel Gonzalez and Chris Gonzalez not only played on the golf team but they also led the volleyball team to the semifinals of the CIF-SS Playoffs. This is a talented group of athletes that will leave a void in our athletic program, a void that now needs to be filled.
With 5 Senior golfers graduating this year the future now lies in the hands of Sophomore Eduardo Zavala and Freshmen David Gonzalez and Cristian Montalban. They have improved all season long and hopefully with more practice on the course and good training from our former alumni standouts Fidel Rodriguez and Gabe Hernandez, they will continue to improve and lead us to future successes.
We are grateful to the Catalina Island Golf Course for providing us with such a nice course free of cost for our local Junior Golfers and the visiting teams and we appreciate all the support from the community. Avalon continues to be a special place for our youth, providing them with unique opportunities for both competition and exposure to different cultures and traveling experiences. All is good in the hood of Avalon!
