The Lady Lancers basketball team took 3rd place in the three day tournament The Avalon Basketball Classic.  The tournament was held Dec. 28-30 with six teams participating in a pool play system.  AGBU, Archer, Avalon, Bishop Diego, Hesperia and Vaughn.

Dec. 28th Avalon faced an old rival and last year’s CIF  Champ Bishop Diego.  Both teams struggled to score, and although Avalon out rebounded Bishop by 15. blocked 10 of their shots and stole six balls they could not convert their great defense into offense, losing 32-29.  Selina Morones stood out with two pts, five rebs, three assits, one stl, and three blks.

Dec. 30, Avalon played two games.  The first was against the White Tigers of Vaughn.  Avalon attacked from the begging jump to gain a 24-6 lead at half.  Led by Taryn Minuto’s 15 points, the Lady Lancers won 47-25.  Three Lady Lancers were in double figures, Minuto, Morones 11 pts, and Madeline Hiniker 11 pts.  Another outstanding defensive performance came from Haley Campbell with six pts, 18 rebs, two stls, and three blks.

The second game Avalon would face a tough team in Archer, who had Daniella Roberts, leading scorer in the tournament.  Both teams went back and forth but Avalon would take a seven point lead into half.  Avalon would lead by 17 at one point in the fourth quarter, then Morones, who had done a brilliant job defending Roberts, fouled out.  Archer used that to get a run going and Avalon squeezed out a 44-42 win.  Hiniker had six pts, 14 rebs, and two stls. Minuto had 12 pts, 12 rebs, four assits, and four stls.

Going into the last game the Lady Lancers were into a four way tie for first with AGBU, Bishop Diego, and Hesperia.  The decision who would play, came down to who allowed the least amount of points for the tournament.

AGBU and Bishop were those two who would play for the Championship.  AGBU would go on to win it by 16.  Avalon and Hesperia would play for 3rd.  Despite Hesperia’s incredible athleticism, Avalon  led again by Minuto 10 pts, eight rebs, five assits, nine stls, and Hiniker 14 pts, 13 rebs, and two stls, won 51-41.

The Avalon Basketball Classic was seen by all as a huge success.  The Lady Lancers took 3rd place and won three out of four games, extending their overall record to 4-2. Minuto was named to the All-Tourney Team.  Avalon will play again this Saturday Jan. 9th at 11 a.m. in the AHS Gymnasium vs. Palm Valley.  Come support and follow all their action on Maxpreps.com or the Lady Lancers Facebook page.
