Humane Society’s oldest resident passes away

On November 5, 2019, Porsha, our oldest cat in residence at the Humane Society, passed away peacefully with Dr. Denney and Dianne Stone by her side. We believe she was approximately 24 years old.

Porsha began her life on the island with Marie Whittington. When Marie could no longer care for her, she became a permanent resident at the Humane Society. While many people would have liked to adopt her, her health issues and aversion to the litter box made her a very high maintenance cat.

Porsha had quite a following. Visitors who come to the island often, would make a point to see her and inquire about her health and wellbeing. She had daily visits from locals and especially the children who would stop by to say hello. She had a distinctive, craggily, old lady voice and if she was not in her window, (she rated a private room with a “garden” window), she would come out to greet her company if they called to her.

Some thought her beautiful, others thought her odd or funny looking, especially after she’d been shaved, which added to her humorous appearance. However, when you’re a Persian cat with an abbreviated face and long silver hair, you are unique and deserve to have an attitude.

Over the years Porsha had her share of health problems. She lost the vision in one eye due to a scratch. Other ailments brought her to the brink many times, but with expert care by Dr. Denney and our devoted volunteers, she rallied. On her last day, she let her special caregivers, Rick and Nancy Northrup know that she was ready to say goodbye.

In lieu of flowers, Porsha requested that donations of (cat) food, litter, or simply money, be given to the Humane Society for the benefit of those remaining in their care. She always was fond of the other cats and was thinking of them to the end.

Rest In Peace beautiful Porsha. Go find the other beloved island pets who have gone on ahead of you.
