Harbour Activity Report: September 2012

Wonderful weather, warm sea temperatures, calm seas and great events contributed to a great month for the Harbor. Our average high temperature was 74 degrees.

The Zane Grey Tournament was once again moved to Dana Point in an attempt to improve fishing results. The Catalina Classic Tournament was held in Avalon on the 24th and 25th with one prize winning marlin weighed in between the 45 boats participating. The Catalina Art Festival was held the weekend of the 14th through the 17th, beginning on a Friday again this year.

On September 8th, the 53rd Annual US Outrigger Championships Catalina Crossing began with 58 women and coed teams paddling from Newport Beach to Avalon. As they did last year, the Lanakila Team took first place honors finishing the 26 mile crossing in under 4 ½ hours. On Sunday the 49 men and coed teams paddled a 30 mile course back to Newport with the Lanakila team again finishing first in just over 4 hours. For the second year, a temporary anchorage area was set up for securing the Outriggers in front of Middle beach in addition to allowing them on the sand on South Beach.

The Seal Beach Yacht Club held their 2012 Golf Cruise the weekend of the 28th with 16 boats.

Transiting from Alaska to warmer climates, the “Star Princess” stopped in Avalon on Thursday the 27th with 2613 passengers.

The first Catalina Island Air Show and Festival, celebrating 100 years of aviation history in Catalina was held on the 29th and 30th. The popularity and anticipation of this event was marked by the inner harbor filling up by mid afternoon on Thursday preceding the weekend.

Skiff owners are reminded that skiffs are subject to citation if tied to a dinghy dock in excess of 72 hours without movement. Also, please pay close attention to notices posted as both the Barbara Pearson and the Club Dinghy Docks will be removed in October. Once installed, skiffs in good condition may be tied to the sting line on the east side of the harbor without the 72 hour restriction.
