Football team wins big in opener

Lancers’ offense racks up 504 yards on offense in win

The eight-man Division 1 football Lancers played their home opener on Saturday before a nice sized crowd who cheered them on to a big 73-14 victory over the visiting Ocean View Christian Patriots from San Diego on Saturday.

The Lancers got the ball rolling early in the game and never stopped. Play after play, Avalon showed their toughness and pure talent on both offense and defense. The Lancers offense racked up 263 passing yards and 241 rushing yards, totaling 504 yards. Avalon’s defense had 3 sacks, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery and 52 tackles, shutting out the Patriots 3 out of the 4 quarters and allowing only 17 yards rushing.

Senior QB, Antonio Ramos set a new team record for passing, going 5/6 with 263 yards and Junior WR and team captain Adalberto Martinez also set a new team record with 215 yards receiving. Both Ramos and Martinez are nationally ranked for 8-man football with Ramos being #8 in the nation and #2 in California for passing yards per game and Martinez being #2 in the nation and #1 in California for receiving yards a game.

Other key contributors to the game were Junior FB, DeAngelo Reyes who had 38 yards rushing, 47 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns, Sophomore RB, Juan Hernandez with 33 yards rushing and his first career touchdown, Junior CB, Adrian Rodriguez with an interception and multiple tackles, Junior DE, Jesse Grange with multiple tackles and 1 fumble recovery, Freshmen DT, Francisco Arellano and Junior DT, Jonah Sampson with 8 combined tackles and Sophomore DE, Gustavo Hernandez with 11 tackles and 1 sack.

The Lancers will take to the road and travel down to San Diego to play the reigning San Diego Section Champions, Foothills Christian on Friday, Sept. 13. The game will be played on the Jr. Seau field with kickoff at 7 p.m.
