Catalina Island Conservancy invites families and nature lovers of all ages to Family Discovery Night, a fun-filled evening under the stars from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Catalina Museum for Art & History (217 Metropole Ave., Avalon, CA 90704). The free event combines science, storytelling and hands-on activities with a special focus on Catalina’s beloved Island fox and wildfire awareness efforts.
The evening’s centerpiece is the outdoor premiere of Back from the Brink: Resurgence of the Catalina Island Fox at 8 p.m. This inspiring 18-minute documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Conservancy’s biologists and their work to protect one of Catalina’s most iconic—and once endangered—species. Free popcorn will be served during the screening.
Other highlights include:
- Fox and Fire-Themed Treats and Activities
- Junior Ranger Program – Kids can complete a conservation-themed booklet, take the Junior Ranger oath and earn a wooden junior ranger badge.
- Discovery Passport Game – Children can visit booths, collect stamps and turn in their passport for a prize.
- Mascot Reveal – Get a first look at the Conservancy’s new wildfire awareness mascot and help choose her name.
- Fire Danger Level Launch – Learn about the Conservancy’s new fire awareness tool and how you can help protect Catalina’s wildlands.
