Avalon welcomes new Vons

The community joined in the ribbon-cutting event to welcome the opening of the new Vons market on Wednesday. In addition to the ribbon-cutting, city officials welcomed the store and local students performed music. Vons Pavilion also presented Avalon School with a $5,000 grant. A large Avalon community turnout welcomed the opening of the new Vons market as the store held its Grand Opening celebration on Wednesday.

A ribbon-cutting, as well as music from local students highlighted the event, for the store, located at 240 Sumner Ave. The new store will replace the two smaller stores currently operating just blocks away from the new location. City officials were also on hand to welcome the new store, which residents have been eager to see open.

“I don’t know if Christmas arrived early or late, all I know is there were smiles and tears on the faces of the young and old, as if it were Christmas morning,” Mayor Anni Marshall said.

The new market is more than 23,000 square feet and will offer expanded services to the community, including hot prepared food options and bakery options.

“This new Vons has been an exciting opportunity to build the state-of-the-art store that shows our ongoing commitment to the Avalon community where we’ve served since 1987 and will continue to serve for many years to come,” stated Shane Dorcheus, President of Albertsons Companies Southern California Division. “Our customers will be pleased with the expanded variety of services and new product offerings that we’re bringing to the local community.”

The new store will be led by store manager Brian Riley, with more than 15 years of service with the Company.
