The Avalon Lions Club recently donated $1,000 to the Girls Soccer Team for replacement uniforms and equipment. Last season the 13 team members won their league through hard work at practice and a great team spirt. This year 23 girls turned out for the team. The 2018-2019 season gets started on Nov.29 at 3 p.m. on Joe Machado Field. Head Coach Andrew Hobbs believes in teaching winning soccer skills as well as wining life skills. Congratulations on last season and good luck on this year’s program.

Nov. 17 will see the Avalon Lions Club and helpers manning the aid stations for the Catalina Island Half Marathon and 10 K Race. Each year Avalon Lion John Regalado coordinates people, supplies, transportation and emergency arrangements for this wonderful race.

The Half Marathon will start at 8:30 a.m., the 10K Run will start at 8:40 a.m. and the Kids Race will start at 9:30 a.m. Please be extra careful driving around Avalon and in the Interior on Saturday.

Each November the Avalon Lions Club donates $1,500 to the city of Avalon Thanksgiving food basket program. When this program first started Avalon Lions were getting the food, packing the baskets and delivering the baskets to needy people in Avalon. Congratulations to the Avalon City Recreation Department for taking over this program and helping needy people in Avalon have a better Thanksgiving Meal.

Joe Martinez, the Avalon Lion who works with the Hospital Gift Shop reports that Avalon Lion Club Members were helpful in November hauling away TV sets and other unwanted furniture that was left outside the gift shop. Thanks to Avalon Lion Tom Jordahl for the use of his truck. Please do not leave TV sets, big furniture and anything else out side of the Hospital Gift Shop when it is closed.

The devastating fire in the Northern California area found Avalon Lion Jim Watson, a Red Cross disaster volunteer, working in his home town of Chico. Two of the shelters Lion Jim has been working in are his old junior high school and the Elks Lodge where Lion Jim had his senior prom. According to Lion Jim, 50,000 evacuees need food, shelter and funds.

Please consider supporting the American Red Cross at this time of great need.

The Avalon Lions Club is part of Lions International, the largest community support organization in the world. The Avalon Lions Club was established 70 years ago by people who had a heart for serving the Avalon Community.
