The Avalon City Council on Tuesday, May 21, unanimously approved a request for a maximum of $15,000 for the Recreation Department to spend on the week-long Avalon Centennial Celebration.
Most of the money, about $10,000, will go to pay for the fireworks show that will conclude the celebration.
The rest will go to three-compartment sinks for food vendors to be used at various centennial events during the week. The request came as part of an update presented by Recreation Coordinator Jennifer Lavelle. She said the fireworks show, which would take place on June 26, Avalon’s 100th anniversary, would be the same size as the Two Harbors fireworks show.
“We don’t want to outdo the show on the fourth,” said Mayor Bob Kennedy.
According to Lavelle, staff also wanted to purchase two three-compartment sinks. The sinks are required by the Los Angeles County Health Department for food vendors at community events.
Lavelle said staff was hoping to set an example by following the health agency’s regulations.
The issue of permits for serving food at community events apparently came up during a March 28 conference call between representatives of the city of Avalon, the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce and Environmental Health officials. According to Lavelle’s staff report, the two three-compartment sinks would cost $2,470 each, including shipping and handling.
Planning for Avalon’s centennial has been going on for months. The celebration will begin Thursday, June 20, with a Centennial Festival on Crescent Avenue.
On Friday, June 21, Avalon will have an old fashioned Fish Fry that will be free of charge to the first 500 participants. Lavelle said the food had been donated by US Foods.
The Fish Fry will highlight Avalon’s service clubs.
The Lions will cook, the Women’s Forum will serve the food, the VFW will provide the beer garden and the Rotary Club will set up and tear down everything.
For now, there are no plans for Saturday events. On Sunday, June 23, there will be free movies on the beach including both films shot on Catalina Island and local 8 and 16mm home movies.
Monday, June 24, will feature a Pack a Picnic Night at Joe Machado Field. The night will include barbecued food, softball and a community photo.
Tuesday, June 25, will be Band Night on the Wrigley State.
Wednesday, June 26, Avalon’s actual anniversary, will feature a barbecue on the beach, awards presented on the Wrigley Stage and fireworks over the harbor.
