Cross country team sees two runners taking first place

On Friday, March 5, Avalon Cross Country traveled to Yorba Regional Park to race against Acaciawood School from Anaheim. Avalon runners dominated the race with first place finishes by Leonardo Perico for the boys and Arelene Cazares for the girls. With just five runners, the Lancers don’t have enough athletes to compile team scores and will only compete for individual scores.

Other Avalon High sports returning to competition include soccer, golf, baseball, and softball. However, most of the teams are still in the process of finding opponents and scheduling games. The Lancer baseball team has arranged a game against Tarbut V’Torah at the Orange County Great Park on March 19.

On Feb. 23, Los Angeles County high school sports were allowed to return to competition after the COVID-19 infection rate had fallen below 14 per 100,000. The adjusted tier rate on Feb. 23 was at 12.3 cases per 100,000. On Tuesday, that number had fallen to 5.2 per 100,000.

While sports competition is returning, the guidelines for spectators are still restricted. Generally, only immediate family of the student-athletes are allowed to attend, however, even that is not a definitive number. Family members are encouraged to reach out to their schools to find out if and how many spectators will be allowed to attend any sporting events.
