Business group selects Spectrum to run annual event from 2021-2023

After a national search for management of one of Catalina Island’s annual events, Spectrum Sports Management, Inc. was selected for an initial three-year period to begin operating the Catalina Island Triathlon. Spectrum Sports received the highest score of three proponents responding to an RFP put out by Love Catalina earlier this year. A review committee made up of Island event management experts and previous race participants reviewed three proposals and interviewed representatives from Alpha Win, based in New York with operations throughout California; CalTri Events, also with operations in multiple states; and Spectrum Sports Management, based in Claremont, California.

Among the reasons for Spectrum Sports being selected was their deep knowledge of the unique aspects of Catalina Island needed to put together a sporting event here. Spectrum previously operated the triathlon for many years but ceased doing so in 2015 due to conflicting events on the mainland. Spectrum also manages other race events on Catalina Island, including the Catalina Island Marathon and works in various capacities with mainland races including the iconic LA Marathon.

Among the immediate needs Spectrum will be addressing is obtaining guidelines from Los Angeles County and the state government that will allow for safely returning to providing races here. Such races are key economic generators and drivers of visitor demand on the Island. Spectrum is among a coalition of sports management firms that are currently seeking support for the safe reopening of endurance events. The coalition is seeking signatures for a petition that may be found at change.org. As of Wednesday afternoon, March 10, the petition had received 3,048 signatures.
