Avalon Lancers off to strong start of 2018 season

The Avalon Lancers football team traveled to Huntington Beach last Saturday to take on the Brethren Christian Warriors, another league opponent. Brethren was an 11-man football team that reached the state semifinals in 2016 and moved down to 8-man this past offseason.

The Lancers were geared up and ready to take on this new league opponent and that quickly showed. By the end of the first quarter it was 30-0 with touchdowns from Jason Campos, DeAngelo Reyes and Beto Martinez.

Avalon offense had some different faces playing this week. Freshmen Juan Hernandez started the second half racking up yardage in the backfield, while sophomore Jacob Morales made his debut running the ball for 90+ yards and a touchdown.

The Lancers defense had another phenomenal game shutting out the warriors. Avalon’s defense scored off of a fumble, forced a safety, had 7+ sacks and were relentless with pressure from the D-Line. Cristo Hernandez is now up to 13.5 sacks in just 3 games, leading the nation.

The highlight for special teams had to be Calvin Rios, the Lancers 260-pound lineman, who returned a 40 yard kick return setting the lancers up for another score. Beto Martinez had a touchdown from a 45 yard punt return and last but not least kicker Angel Hernandez had an amazing game with 4 PAT field goals and a 2 point conversion run. The Lancers ended with a 44-0 shutout.

The Lancers take on Hillcrest Christian at home on Sept 21 with kick off at 5 p.m.
