The Catalina Outdoor Adventure Club recently hosted a Survival Skills Day at Ben Weston Beach in partnership with the Catalina Island Conservancy.
Participating students began the day with an adventurous hike down to Ben Weston Beach, where they received hands-on instruction in essential outdoor survival skills, including fire building and shelter making. Volunteer survival-skills instructor Coach K generously donated his time and expertise, helping create a memorable and educational outdoor experience.
The Catalina Island Conservancy supported the event and provided transportation, making this remote island adventure accessible to local participants. Catalina Cookie Company also continued its support by providing treats for the students.
The Catalina Outdoor Adventure Club is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free outdoor recreational and educational opportunities for Catalina Island youth and families. Its goal is to make outdoor adventure accessible to local children while helping them develop confidence, practical skills, environmental awareness and a lasting connection to the island’s natural resources.
Programs hosted or supported by the club include survival-skills events, the free 10-week Kids Summer Fishing Derby, boater education and hands-on boating experiences, youth archery and shooting-sports instruction, and island exploration activities. The club also works with community partners, including the City of Avalon Recreation Department, to expand the opportunities available to local youth.
In addition to providing its own free programs, the Catalina Outdoor Adventure Club offers scholarships that help local youth participate in recreational and educational opportunities provided by other organizations.
The Survival Skills Day reflects the club’s broader mission of bringing local organizations, businesses and volunteers together to create meaningful outdoor experiences for Catalina Island youth at no cost to participating families.
