The Catalina Island Museum’s year-end campaign, YOU + US, highlights its growing role in the Avalon community. As one of the oldest nonprofits serving the island, the museum is celebrating 65 years of preserving Santa Catalina Island history and bringing new and exciting exhibitions and programs for residents and visitors to enjoy.
The museum is a private nonprofit organization. The majority of its work relies on private donations and it is working harder than ever to keep the Catalina Island Museum fresh, fun and full of opportunities. To do so, the organization needs your help. Donations collected during the YOU + US campaign will help the museum create one-of-a-kind exhibitions from its archive, borrow world-class exhibitions from partnering museums and artists, preserve and collect Catalina’s written, oral and material history, create a more enriching community through public programs and plan financially for another successful 65 years.
An anonymous donor is challenging friends of the museum with a pledge of $25,000. All donations received by the museum for the remainder of December will be matched by this donor dollar for dollar, up to a total of $25,000. Truly every dollar makes a difference.
With your help and the matching funds of the challenge pledge, the museum looks to reach its campaign goal of $120,000 in new donations by Dec. 31. The exhibitions scheduled include:
• Wrigley’s Catalina: A Centennial Celebration
Feb. 16, 2019 – January 19, 2020
With the purchase of the Santa Catalina Island Company, William Wrigley Jr. embarked on a decade of grand projects to develop the island into “the most popular pleasure resort in the world.”
• Elizabeth Turk: Tipping Points
March 2019 – March 2020
Sculpture artist and MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship Awardee Elizabeth Turk presents Tipping Points, an outdoor sculpture installation. Evening hours at the museum are planned from late June through early September.
• Esther Williams: The Swimming Queen of The Big Screen
