The Southern California Lions Mobile screening unit made its third ocean voyage to Catalina Island on April 11, to help the people of Avalon.

The windy weather was a concern up until the last hours when the waves abated, and the barge was able to bring its cargo to the Avalon Freight Line Ramp in the early morning hours of health fair day.

The Lions Mobile Screening Unit is equipped to check people for hearing loss, vision problems and diabetes situations. During the 2019 Avalon Health Fair 80 people were given a diabetes Screening, 62 people were given a vision screening and 17 people were given a hearing screening. Of these 152 people some were referred to the Lions Low Vision Services Program and others to the Lions Diabetes Foundation.

Anyone needing more information on these Lions Club Community Service Programs may contact Jennifer Cantillion, MSU Manager, at 310-413-2384. Burney Ramming at 310-422-1406 has more information on Lions Hearing, Vision and Diabetes screening follow up action as well.

Southern California Lions who volunteered their time to operate the MSU in Avalon were: Dr. Ken Shiomi and Jennifer Cantillion, Carson Lions Club; Poque Ferraira and Blanda Ferraira, L.A. New Horizon Lions Club; Bill Pendelton, Bellflower Lions Club; Perla Martinez, Lucilla Calderon, Elizabeth Campos and Darren Ohata, Carson Vison Center. The Avalon Lions Club Members were happy to once again provide this service to our community. Transporting the 19,400-pound Lions Mobile Screening Unit to Catalina Island and back to San Pedro for the 2019 Health Fair would not have been possible without the generous donation of the $3,850 ocean freight bill by Avalon Freight Services. On behalf of the entire Catalina Island Community, Thank You Very Much Avalon Freight Services.
