A geyser erupted from a water pipe leak Wednesday, July 15, on a road between Little Harbor and Two Harbors.

“There’s a lot of traffic on that road, a lot of big trucks, sometimes the water pipes breach and fail,” said Avalon City Councilman Joe Sampson.

Councilman Sampson said that the water piping along the roads on the Island’s west side are largely outdated and are in need of upgrades, but he doesn’t think the leak was caused by negligence.

Sampson estimated that no more than 5,000 gallons of water was lost during the leak that went on for between half an hour to an hour.

“It’s just wear and tear on an old system and Edison knows it needs to be updated,” Sampson said.

Apparently, there has been more traffic on that road since Southern California Edison started trucking water to Two Harbors from the Middle Ranch Canyon. That road experiences roughly 10 pipe bursts a year. Councilman Sampson said that he’s more concerned with the storage tanks for the desalination plant. Sampson believes that Edison should increase its storage and be less negligent with overflow.
