Following a preliminary hearing that began Jan. 9 and ended Feb. 21, Catalina Island businesswoman Yueh Mei Tucey, is scheduled to be arraigned on March 6, according to the Los Angeles Superior Court website. Authorities accused Tucey and her recently deceased husband Jack Arthur Tucey of multiple counts of wage theft. Jack Tucey died on Dec. 2, 2023, according to an obituary published in the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

A preliminary hearing determines whether there a case will go to trail.

“In California, a preliminary hearing is a court proceeding where the D.A. has the burden to show the judge that there is probable cause you committed the alleged felonies. Preliminary hearings serve as a check to weed out any cases with insufficient “rational grounds” for prosecuting you,” according to www.shouselaw.com.

“If you win the preliminary hearing, then the judge will dismiss your case. If you lose the preliminary hearing, then your case will be ‘bound over’ from Superior Court to District Court for a new arraignment within 15 days and then possibly a jury trial,” according to www.shouselaw.com.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office announced the filing of charges against the Tuceys on Nov. 2. The Los Angeles Superior Court website reports the date of Yueh Mei Tucey’s arrest on Oct. 30.
