Getting your tree is the first step to feeling the start of the Holiday Season. There is no better way to get a tree than through supporting local non-profits by taking one home at the Christmas Tree Decorating contest.

The annual contest sponsored by Catalina Island Foundation and the City of Avalon was held downtown by the stage for the first time. The nine trees added a fuller Christmas feel for the lighting of the City Tree.

The prizes were: 1st place $1,000; 2nd $500; 3rd $250. All prize money was donated by Catalina Island Foundation, an organization that support local entities that are working to maintain or improve the quality of life on the island. The Chamber of Commerce gave $100 gift Certificates to the 4th and 5th place winners.

Two local citizens sponsored two of the trees for $150 each which went directly to those organizations and the citizen got to take those trees home. The remaining seven trees were raffled off for others to take home.

Each organization took home $76 from the raffle split. First place went to Kids at Play, 2nd ICES Education, 3rd place Catalina Kid Ventures, 4th place Women’s Forum, 5th place Avalon Girls Scouts.

The remaining participants were Catalina Breakers, Avalon Boys Scouts, The Teen Center, and The SCI Pony Club. The City, CIF, the Chamber and all the organizations would like to thank everyone for their donations and support. We wish you a Happy Holiday.
