The weather was perfect — warm, sunny, clear — with 72-degree calm water for the fourth fundraising swim for pancreatic cancer, pancan.org. About 30 swimmers gathered at Casino Point on Saturday and were off at 7:30 a.m. for their 2.3-mile round trip swim to Frog Rock.

The average person finished the swim in about 90 minutes, while Kate Eagan maximized her social distancing by finishing in 55 minutes. Ages of swimmers spanned 65 years, from 73 to 8-year-old Penny Canby who completed a mile of the course.

Four years ago, when we attached a cause to our big annual swim, we selected pancreatic cancer, pancan.org, in honor of a local nurse, Richard Kleinman, who was battling pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, we all have many very close friends and relatives stricken with this deadly cancer. This year we raised about $5,000 from handed-in donations and those made online at pancan.org in honor of Catalina Island Swim Club.

For all those who participated and donated, thank you.
