Four-run fifth inning lifts Sunset to win
For the Islander
The final game of the Catalina CoEd Softball League Fall Season was to determine the champion of the tournament. Buoys & Gulls faced off against Sunset Bar & Grill.
Buoys & Gulls was up first and scored two on the home run from Julian Tejeda. In the second inning Buoys & Gulls kept the offense rolling. Five runs were scored on a base hit, a fielder’s choice, a double from Caitlin Lopez and triples from Paul Daniel Romo and J.D. Laflin.
Sunset Bar & Grill got on the board in the bottom of the inning when a fielder’s choice and a base hit brought home one. In the third inning Sunset Bar & Grill put together two base hits, a double from Phil Lopez and a triple from Joe Hernandez to score three.
Buoys & Gulls answered in the top of the fourth with three runs off four base hits and an error. Sunset Bar & Grill made it interesting in the bottom of the inning when they rallied with four base hits and doubles from Tyler Engel, Francisco Bravo and Phil Lopez to bring home six and tie it up.
Sunset Bar & Grill took the lead in the fifth inning when four base hits and a double from Tyler Engel put another four on the board. Buoys & Gulls added another run when J.D. Laflin hit a triple and later scored. Sunset Bar & Grill left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning.
Top of the seventh and final inning, Buoys & Gulls was down by three. A walk and a base hit left two stranded as the game ended with the score Buoys & Gulls 11, Sunset Bar & Grill 14. Congratulations to Sunset Bar & Grill for their come from behind victory to claim the tournament.
For Buoys & Gulls J.D. Laflin, Julian Tejeda and Caitlin Lopez all contributed three hits. Uriel Castillo, Ron Bevins, Paul Daniel Romo and Missy Schafer collected two hits.
For Sunset Bar & Grill Alexandra Tran had a whopping 13 at bats, and collected five hits. Tyler Engel and Phil Lopez were three for three. Joe Hernandez, Francisco Bravo and Gustavo Gutierrez collected two hits. Jose Barreras and Rafa Silva had one hit.
