For 2021 the usual round up of Holiday Events and Activities were back to a more “normal” experience. Among the aspects of this year’s Shop Catalina were some activities that brought the community some lots of holiday joy. Three Decorating Contests were held with winners by group below.

Business Decorating: Over 20 merchants decked the halls, eaves and windows of their places of business this year. When judges were roaming the town Saturday evening, they picked the top three. First Place for best Holiday Decorating was awarded to the Avalon Community Church. Second place went to the Metropole Marketplace and Third Place to Fairview Homeowners Association.

Residential Decorating: Over 80 homes and condos were spotted during the judging with decorations that wowed. The first place winner is Isidro Silva & Esperanza Trino @ Eucalyptus Hill Apartments. Second Place was awarded to the home of Pam & Chuck Martin on Catalina Avenue. Third place was awarded to Jackie Kruse at 310 Metropole.

Gingerbread House Decorating: Avalon Rotary Club sponsored the second annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest. Many Catalina families made it a multi-generational project to build and decorate the houses. First place went to Stephanie and Vanessa Hernandez. Second place went to Brittany Arnold and third place went to Lilly Dasa. The People’s Choice award went to Natalie Latshaw and Christy Lins.

Congratulations to all the winners and thank you for celebrating the holidays with incredible community spirit! Home and Business Decorating Contest winners may pick up Love Catalina Gift Certificates redeemable at most Catalina Island places of business, by coming by the Catalina Island Visitor Center on the Green Pleasure Pier.

We would like to thank the 30 plus merchants who are participants in the 2021 Shop Catalina offers: City of Avalon staff, The Jingle Singers, CKV Kids Chorus, Avalon Fire Department, Mayor Marshall and of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus!
