The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of Sept. 14 to Sept. 20-23.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
September 15
- Deputies responded to the Dive Park regarding a missing snorkeler. The caller stated he and his friend were snorkeling and now he was unable to locate him. The fire departments, Harbor Patrol and deputies converged on the area and established a Unified Command. Local residents immediately entered the water and began searching. Approximately 30 minutes later the man was located near Descanso Beach in good health and good spirits. The man stated he was enjoying the beautiful Catalina Coast and left his friends.
September 16
- Deputies and the Fire departments responded to Hogs Back Road regarding a brush fire. The fire was located and immediately extinguished.
- Deputies responded to a disturbance call on Crescent Avenue. The caller stated a female adult was playing loud music in the courtyard of the hotel. The caller also stated the woman was arguing and did not want to lower her music. The deputies arrived and spoke to the wannabe DJ. The deputies advised the woman her music was annoying guests. The woman turned down her music and was cooperative with the deputies.
- Deputies responded to a disturbance at the Mole. The caller stated there were 2 unruly passengers on the boat. The deputies contacted and rebel rousers and advised them they would not be allowed on the boat due to their behavior. Realizing they would not be able to leave the island, the couple decided to rent a hotel room for the night.
September 17
- Deputies responded to a disturbance on Sumner Avenue. The caller stated a man with pink shoes was being belligerent with the doorman. The deputies contacted the man and determined he was extremely drunk. The man swung his arm and struck the deputy on the face. Lee Powell, 41, of Compton, was arrested on suspicion of battery on a peace officer and of being drunk in public.
September 18
- Deputies received a call of a fight on Sumner Avenue. The caller stated a man was trying to fight with the security guard at the location. A sergeant was parked just up the street and observed the incident. The sergeant saw 2 men appear to be arguing, then moments later saw them hugging like long, lost friends. There was no crime at the location, just a misunderstanding that was resolved with a hug.
September 20
- Deputies responded to a business disturbance at Float 5. The caller who was a cruise ship employee stated a family of 4 who were on the cruise ship were refusing to pay their bill.
The deputies advised the employees that the cruise was still going on and the financial matter needed to be settled between the cruise line and the passengers.
- Deputies attended Avalon School’s Back to School Night. They spoke to families regarding safety issues and bicycle laws.
