Sheriff’s Log: published Oct. 4, 2019

Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Sept. 25 to Oct. 1, 2019.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

September 25

• Deputies responded to the 100 block of Sumner Avenue regarding two people fighting. Deputies learned the two were only arguing, and no laws were violated.

September 26

• Deputies met with the Catalina Island Women’s Forum to discuss efforts to assist victims of domestic violence.

September 27

• Deputies arrested Hagop Haddajian from Simi Valley on suspicion of using fake identification to get into a local club in the 100 block of Sumner Avenue.

September 28

• Deputies were on the Green Pier when they were notified that Jerry Osborn from Springfield, Missouri, fell into the ocean from the dinghy dock and was drowning. Deputies ran to his assistance and pulled him out of the water.

Osborn was placed under arrest on suspicion of being drunk and unable to care for himself. He commended the deputies for saving his life.

• A local resident reported someone tried to scam her out of $5,000. She was allegedly involved in an online dating relationship with the suspect. Instead of paying the money, she immediately reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Department. An investigation is ongoing.

September 29

• Deputies arrested Phillip Lopez and Tammy Clemente from Avalon on suspicion of assault. The crime occurred in the 100 block of Metropole Avenue.

September 30

• Deputies received a call of a stolen electric bicycle that had been thrown into the water at the Dive Park near the Casino. The bicycle was damaged and returned to the owner. The investigation is ongoing.

October 1

• Numerous first responders, the city of Avalon, and Southern California Edison responded to a major water and gas leak on Middle Terrace. There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

Please remember to use sidewalks rather than walking in the middle of the roadway.
