Sheriff’s Log: Oct. 21 to Oct. 27, 2020

Editor’s note: The fol­low­ing is the Avalon Sheriff’s Sta­tion significant incidents report for the week of Oct. 21 to Oct. 27, 2020. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

October 21

• Deputies responded to float 5 at 120 Pebbly Beach Road regarding an intoxicated man yelling and swinging a steel pipe at the end of the float. Deputies arrested Alejandro Santiago, 48, of Signal Hill on suspicion of being drunk in public.

• Deputies issued a Torrance man an Avalon administrative citation in the 200 block of Sumner Avenue for not wearing a face covering in violation of the LA County Health Department Order.

• Deputies issued a parking citation in the 200 block of Sumner Avenue for parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.

October 22

• Deputies and the fire departments responded to an overturned golf cart at the Botanical Gardens. The driver, a 20 year old South El Monte resident was drinking alcohol while driving a golf cart. Deputies arrested Daniel Ly, 20, of South El Monte, on suspicion of driving without a driver’s license, minor in possession of an alcoholic beverage, and drinking an alcoholic beverage in a vehicle.

October 23

• Deputies received a call that a suspect used a stolen credit card to rent two jet skis at a specific time. When the suspect arrived to rent the jet skis, deputies detained him and his girlfriend. Deputies arrested John Habib, 34, of Huntington Beach, on suspicion of using a stolen credit card. .

• Deputies were notified that a victim had her golf cart stolen in the 100 block of Metropole Avenue. The victim was able to locate her golf cart on Chimes Tower Road. Deputies responded to the location of the golf cart and arrested a 14 year old juvenile for suspicion of grand theft auto, minor in possession of marijuana, and a curfew violation. This is his third grand theft auto arrest in three months. The vehicle was returned to the owner.

October 24

• Deputies responded to a hit and run traffic collision report which occurred near Whittley Avenue and Marilla Avenue. There were no injuries and the damage was minor. The investigation is ongoing.

• Deputies responded to a traffic collision where a female fell out of a golf cart at Wrigley Road and Middle Terrace. Preliminary investigation shows the driver was driving too fast and the female did not have her seatbelt on. The female was transported to the hospital due to her injuries.

October 25

• Deputies responded to the 400 block of Crescent Avenue regarding several juveniles damaging a skylight on the roof of a hotel. The individuals were identified and the incident is going to be handled as a civil matter per the hotel employee.

October 26

• Deputies, Harbor Patrol, and the fire departments conducted safety patrol checks throughout the city of Avalon and in the harbor due to high surf and high winds. Avalon Baywatch was able to rescue several boaters from their boats that were being pushed toward the rocks. One boat hit the rocks, but no one was injured.

October 27

• Congratulations to the Los Angeles Dodgers for winning the 2020 World Series.

Safety Note

Please continue to wear a face covering when you are on the Catalina Express boats, in Avalon businesses, and when around others on Crescent Avenue. It is a violation of the LA County Health order not to comply.
