The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period May 9 to May 15, 2024.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
May 10
• Deputies responded to the Pleasure Pier for a person not paying his mooring fees. Further investigation determined the man was given a payment plan from the Harbor Master for his unpaid fees. The man said he was not refusing to pay but needed to run the contract by his attorney.
• A sergeant on patrol saw a juvenile riding an electric bicycle without a helmet on St. Catherine Way. He conducted a traffic stop and cited the rider for the violation.
• A deputy on patrol saw 2 people acting suspiciously at the Casino. Due to it being almost midnight, they contacted them to see what they were doing. There was no evidence of any funny business, and they left the location.
May 11
• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Sumner Avenue for a disturbance call. The informant stated there was loud music and loud talking at the location. The deputies arrived and spoke to the disturbing parties, who said they were just trying to BBQ and would keep the noise down. The deputies reminded them it was 230 in the morning and people were trying to sleep. Guess they had a bad case of the late-night munchies.
• A sergeant saw a driver fail to stop for the stop sign at Sumner and Tremont. He conducted a traffic stop and issued the driver a citation for the violation.
May 12
• Deputies responded to the Casino for a disturbance call. The caller stated there was music coming from the parking lot area. The deputies contacted several adults who were enjoying the iconic views and listening to music. They were advised it was 245am and it was probably in their best interest to mosey on home. They agreed and went on their way.
• Deputies responded to the 300 block of Clemente for a domestic disturbance. The caller stated her ex-husband took her coffee drink and poured it on her. The deputies contacted the woman who stated her ex-husband wanted to discuss their marital issues and she was not ready. He grabbed her coffee drink causing it to spill. There was no evidence of any crime but the incident was documented in a non-criminal report.
May 13
• A deputy on foot patrol saw numerous cruise ship passengers drinking alcohol on Crescent Ave. He reminded them they were not on Bourbon Street, they were not in New Orleans and cited them for drinking in public.
• A deputy observed a driver whose vehicle had expired registration. He conducted a traffic stop and issued a ticket for the violation.
May 14
• A deputy on foot patrol observed a man drinking a beer on Crescent Avenue. The man decided to take the beer straight to the head instead of throwing it out upon being warned. The deputy cited the man for drinking in public.
• Deputies responded to the basketball courts for a disturbance call. The caller stated a female adult was harassing people who were trying to hoop it up. The deputies contacted the woman and immediately noticed she was intoxicated. She was having difficulty standing and smelled like alcohol. The woman said she was here by herself and was getting ready to walk to Two Harbors. The individual known as Frank Jesus Cristi Kolba, 49, of Los Angeles, was arrested and booked at Avalon Station on suspicion of being drunk in public.
• Deputies responded to a possible drunk man on Country Club Drive. The caller stated a man was laying on the ground and was drunk. The deputies contacted the man and recognized him from an earlier call and the same man who was ticketing for drinking in public. The man was drunk and unable to care for himself. Chris Petty, 39, of Tarzana, was arrested on suspicion of drunk in public and booked at Avalon Station.
Bicycle Safety Assembly at Avalon School
On Tuesday May 21, 2024, Avalon Sheriff’s Station will host a bicycle safety assembly at Avalon School. Sheriff’s personnel will be discussing traffic laws, bicycle safety and helmet laws. They will also be distributing brand new bicycle helmets to each student. The bicycle helmets were purchased with generous donations from the Catalina Island Yacht Club, Catalina Beverage Company and the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation.
