Sheriff’s Log: June 22 to June 28, 2023

The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of June 22 to June 28, 2023.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

June 22

  • Deputies responded to the Pebbly Road regarding a business disturbance. The caller stated a customer was mad and calling her names on the telephone because she cancelled his tour. The deputies were unable to locate or contact the name caller.

June 23

  • A deputy observed a golf cart displayed the driving patterns of an impaired driver. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver received a ticket for being unlicensed.

June 24

  • Deputies responded to a disturbance call at Float #4. The caller stated several people were involved in a fist fight. The deputies arrived and observed 2 males yelling at each other. They separated the combatants and determined no one was injured. The men were counseled regarding their excessive display of energy and their poor decision making. Both men were cooperative and left the area on separate boats.
  • Deputies responded to a disturbance call on the 500 block of Crescent Avenue. The caller stated a customer was refusing to pay his bill. The deputies contacted the customer and advised him there was a price to pay for every Whicky Whack. The man settled his tab and left the location with his straw hat.

June 25

  • Deputies responded to a fight call at Cabrillo Mole. The caller stated 2 males were fighting at the location. The deputies contacted both men who admitted they were fighting over lost boat keys. They were both apologetic and one of the brawlers discovered the boat keys were in his pocket the entire time. The deputies recommended using a lanyard to avoid future disputes over lost keys.
  • Deputies responded to Hermit Gulch campground regarding a suspicious person.

The caller stated a male adult with a fishing pole was at a campsite and had not paid. The deputies advised the man he could not camp for free.

The man said he had no money and was just trying to leave the island.

The deputies drove the man to the Mole, gave him a ticket on the next departing boat and he happily left the island.

June 26

A deputy and a sergeant were driving on the 100 block of Sumner Avenue at midnight. They saw 2 men who appeared to be arguing and getting ready to throw blows.

They contacted the men and determined one of them was drunk. Pedro Hernandez, 26, of San Bernardino was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication.

  • Deputies responded to the Cabrillo Mole regarding a business disturbance. The caller stated there was an uncooperative passenger on the boat. The deputies contacted the captain of the vessel who denied the man service due to his aggressive behavior. The captain stated the man was being kicked off the boat due to his behavior towards another passenger. The deputies counseled the man and assisted him with travel arrangements off the island.

June 27

  • Deputies responded to a disturbance at the Dive Park. The caller stated a man with a ukelele was harassing her and her kids. The deputies contacted the man who was apologetic and stated he only wanted to play the family and song on his guitar. The man offered to apologize to the family and was advised it was not necessary.

ALL FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL ON CATALINA ISLAND!

All fireworks, even safe and sane are illegal on Catalina Island. The Avalon City Fire Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will be patrolling the community to locate violators and issue criminal citations.

Please protect our beautiful island and do not ignite fireworks.
