The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of July 27 to Aug. 2, 2023.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

July 27

  • Deputies responded to the 300 block of Beacon Street regarding a suspicious person. The caller stated a female transient was sleeping in the stairwell. The deputies contacted the woman and advised her the property owner did not want her sleeping on the stairs. The woman was also advised she would be arrested for trespassing if she returned to the location.

July 29

  • Deputies responded to a local hotel regarding too many people staying in 1 room. The deputies contacted the occupants and advised them they were staying in a hotel room and not a frat house. The disturbing parties agreed to cooperate.
  • Deputies responded to the 100 block of Metropole regarding a lost golf cart. The informant stated her golf cart was missing from where she had parked it. A short time later, the golf cart was located and had been taken accidentally by a tourist. The woman was apologetic and was confused because all the golf carts look similar.
  • A sergeant responded to a disturbance call on the 400 block of Crescent Avenue. The caller stated a female adult was drunk at the location and refusing to leave. When the sergeant arrived, the bothersome female had already left the location and forgot her cellphone which she had thrown at the bartender. The sergeant took the cellphone to the sheriff’s station in hopes the woman would come pick it up. While at the station a man called the cellphone and said it belonged to his wife. He asked where his wife was and why she didn’t have her phone. The man was advised his wife was day drinking and not being very nice. The man said he would address his wife’s behavior and apologized.
  • Deputies responded to a suspicious person call on the 100 block of Sumner Avenue. The caller stated a female transient was living on the steps in front of the location. The deputies contacted the same transient woman whom they spoke with two days earlier on Beacon Street. The deputies offered to assist the woman with services provided by LA County. She refused all help and said she didn’t need anything from them. The woman gathered her seven bags of property and left the location.

July 30

  • Deputies responded to the 800 block of Country Club Drive regarding a disturbance. The caller stated she heard a couple arguing in the room next door. The deputies contacted a woman in the room who said she was arguing with her boyfriend. She said there was no crime other than arguing with her man. She assured the deputies there would be no further problems because she kicked him out of the room for the night.

July 31

  • Deputies responded to the 300 block of Eucalyptus Avenue to check the welfare of an adult male. The man’s son called and said his dad was supposed to head Overtown and visit him but did not show up. The deputies contacted the dad and determined he was doing fine. He stated he would visit his kid when he was done handling his business here at home.

The sergeant asked the man to call his son just to let him know he was OK.

August 1

  • Deputies responded to a 911 call coming from a cellphone. The deputies were able to pinpoint the cellphone’s location at the Mole. The cellphone line was open and arguing could be heard between a man and a woman.

The deputies contacted the couple and determined they were arguing over personal issues. The couple hoped on the next departing boat and left the island.

August 2

  • Deputies were contacted by a man who stated he was attacked by two men on Sumner Avenue.

The man was bleeding profusely from a laceration on his face and was transported to Catalina Island Medical Center. The man said he was standing on the street and punched numerous times on his face. The man stated he is friends with the suspect’s father and would never fight with them. The case is being investigated by Sergeant Kline and video surveillance has been obtained.
