Sheriff’s Log: July 11 to July 17, 2024

The following is the Avalon’s Sheriff’s Stations significant incidents report for the period of July 11 to July 17, 2024. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

July 11

  • Deputies responded to Sumner Avenue for a disturbance call. The informant stated 2 males were arguing near Crescent Avenue. Due to it being 2 in the morning, the responding deputies had a pretty good idea of why the men might be arguing. Upon arriving, their keen intuition was confirmed: An alcohol induced argument. The deputies separated the men and urged them to go home. One of the men took the solid advice and the other man stayed and put his drunk in public symptoms on full display. The man had no one to care for him so he was arrested for public intoxication. Tihar Islam, 22, of Florida, was booked at Avalon Station.

July 12

  • Deputies received a disturbance call on Eucalyptus Avenue. The caller stated several people had set up a net and were playing pickleball in the street. The deputies arrived and observed a family enjoying a competitive game and making wonderful family memories. The pickleballers were not obstructing traffic and not creating any kind of safety hazard.
  • Deputies received a disturbance call on Catalina and Tremont. The caller stated several juveniles were playing loud music and bouncing a basketball. The deputies spoke to the youth, reminded them of the 11 p.m. curfew and asked them to head home. They were all cooperative and left the location.

July 14

  • A deputy and a sergeant responded to a suspicious person call at Hamilton Cove. The caller stated a female adult was sleeping in the bushes. They had responded to a call involving the same woman earlier in the morning, so they were familiar with her. Upon arriving, they saw the woman laying on her back inside the brush, covered in dirt and pine needles. They contacted the woman who immediately woke up and said she was getting a suntan. The woman was extremely intoxicated and unable to care for herself. Barbara Ryan, 60, of Lancaster, was arrested for public intoxication and booked at Avalon Station.
  • Deputies responded to a disturbance at a hotel on Country Club Drive. The caller said there was arguing coming from one of the rooms. The deputies located the feuding couple and a spousal battery was alleged. The woman stated the suspect grabbed her by her arms and pushed her. Kyle Berkley, 30, of Santa Ana, was arrested on the spousal abuse allegation and booked at Avalon Station.

July 15

  • Deputies were contacted by a local restaurant manager who stated a couple left without paying their tab. The couple was located at a bar and settled their tab with the restaurant. There was no evidence of the crime Dine and Dash; it appeared to be a misunderstanding.

July 16

  • Deputies responded to the Plaza for a trespassing call. The deputies located a woman sleeping under a tree and recognized her from prior arrests. They advised the woman she was not allowed on the property and warned her she would be arrested if she came back.
  • Deputies and the fire departments responded to a traffic collision involving a golf cart. The accident occurred on Wrigley Road and involved a solo golf cart which had overturned. There were 4 people in the golf cart and all sustained minor to moderate injuries. The occupants were transported to Catalina Island Health for treatment.

Graffiti

Avalon Station Deputies have noticed an increase in graffiti in the city area.

They are documenting each incident and actively investigating the crime of vandalism. Once the suspect is identified, an arrest will be made and the suspect will be responsible for the cost of damages and repairs. Please be vigilant and keep our city free of graffiti.

Speeding

Avalon Station has also noticed an increase in motorcycles driving at excessive speeds during the nighttime hours.

This is a safety hazard for the riders as well as residents.

We will be strictly enforcing vehicle code laws for speeding, unlicensed drivers and driving without a motorcycle license.
