Sheriff’s Log: Jan. 9 to 15, 2019

Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Jan. 9 to 15, 2019.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.

January 9

• Deputies and the fire departments responded to the 200 block of East Whittley Avenue regarding a medical emergency. An Avalon resident passed away of apparent natural causes.

• Deputies arrested Christian Gonzalez of Avalon on suspicion of stealing items from a friend’s house in the 300 block of Whittley Avenue.

January 10

• Deputies conducted high visibility at the crosswalk on Metropole Avenue in front of Vons. There have been complaints of motorists not stopping for pedestrians. Deputies also conducted high visibility at the stop signs at Beacon Street and Sumner Avenue.

January 11

• Deputies received a call of a male smoking marijuana on Tremont Street as he walked toward the Tremont Apartments. It appeared the male walked into an apartment prior to the deputies’ arrival.

January 12

• Deputies arrested Alfredo Contreras-Martinez of Avalon on suspicion of providing alcoholic beverages to two under age males. Mauricio Rodriguez and Giovanni Leyva were issued citations for possessing alcoholic beverages while being under 21 years old. The incident occurred at County Club Drive and East Whittley Avenue.

• Deputies have received complaints of motorists not stopping at the stop signs on Beacon Street. Deputies issued citations to two motorists for failing to stop at the stop signs.

January 13

• Deputies received a call of rocks in the road on Pebbly Beach Road. Several rocks fell from the hillside and partially blocked the road. There were no injuries and personnel from the city of Avalon removed the rocks.

January 14

• Deputies received 911 calls reporting that Santiago Romero of Alabama was causing a disturbance near Country Club Drive and Tremont Street. Deputies arrived and arrested him for being drunk in public, vandalism, and assaulting a female.

January 15

• An Avalon resident found a small amount of money on the sidewalk in the 100 block of Sumner Avenue. He turned the money into the Sheriff’s Station as found property.

Safety Note

Please drink responsibly. Most of the arrests the Sheriff’s Department makes on Catalina Island are directly related to being “extremely” intoxicated.
