Editor’s note: The following is the Avalon Sheriff’s Station significant incidents report for the week of Jan. 2 to 8, 2019.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Many people who are arrested do not get prosecuted in the first place and many who are prosecuted do not get convicted.
January 2
• Deputies were contacted by a victim who reported the paint on his vehicle had been scratched while it was parked in the 300 block of Clemente Avenue.
January 3
• An Avalon resident reported she had several hundred dollars stolen from her golf cart. During the investigation, deputies conducted a thorough search of the golf cart and the bags in the golf cart.
Deputies found that the money had fallen behind the seat and had not been stolen.
• Avalon Baywatch, Harbor Patrol, and deputies pulled a golf cart out of the ocean at “Lover’s Cove.”
An intoxicated motorist was involved in a traffic collision on New Year’s Eve when his golf cart went into the ocean.
January 4
• An Avalon resident turned in methamphetamine, a narcotic smoking pipe, and marijuana they found near 100 Falls Canyon Road.
January 5
• An Avalon resident came to the Sheriff’s Station and turned in a bag of marijuana they found near the Sol Vista apartments.
January 6
• Deputies and the fire department responded to an assault call at Country Club Drive. A-23-year-old-male had been assaulted. The investigation is ongoing.
January 7
• The Sheriff’s Department’s Mental Evaluation Team responded to the island and assisted deputies with transporting a patient to a hospital on the mainland for evaluation.
January 8
• One adult from Lancaster was issued a citation for smoking marijuana in public in the 100 block of Sumner Avenue.
Safety Note
If you are the victim of a misdemeanor crime, and want the suspect arrested, the law requires you to press charges.
If you do not press charges, deputies cannot legally arrest the suspect (except for a couple of exceptions).
